Two in ten (%) are trans and gender diverse. For the first time in the nation’s history, there is an educated estimate of the size of Australia’s LGBTI+ statistics.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has combined data from nearly 45, responses to its four recent health surveys to shed light on the LGBTI+ community. National reporting on the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ people is often limited by a lack of data on gender, sexual orientation and innate variations of sex characteristics in data collections. Where data are available, it most often refers to people who identify as gay, bureau, or heterosexual.

More thanAustralians — or per cent of the population — identify as LGBTI+, according to the first nationally representative snapshot of Australia's sex- and gender-diverse community. Following a drawn-out battle to include queer, trans and non-binary Australians in the Census, the ABS has shared experimental estimates of the country's LGBTIQ+ populations.
